...A summer road trip
Leg 3: Washington to Albuquerque

Am filled with mixed emotions this day that I'm leaving Washngton. I'm sad to be leaving, but at the same time am excited about seeing new territory in Oregon. So, I take the photos and the memories with me of all that I've seen in Washington, and I carry on. There's no doubt, Oregon has plenty in store for me.

This page comprises pictures that were taken on my last day in Washington, headed down the Highway 97 to the Oregon border.

Some may consider it a mediocre road, even boring. But I was in Heaven as I pulled over many times, especially in the rich fertile land north of Ellensburg, to capture shots of old barns that were just too picturesque to pass up. There were few names, few signs and few landmarks to identify them, so the photos will be without captions. They will speak for themselves.

South of Ellensburg, the terrain changes dramatically to a much drier climate, in fact, the driest part of the state of Washington. I stopped at the Fred Redmon Bridge where a portion of the Selah Cliffs can be viewed.

Down on the Oregon border, a replica of England's Stonehenge makes for a pleasant last visit in Washington.

Here, the Selah Cliffs are an area of interest that I wish I had paid more attention to. Among these cliffs live a rare flower called the basalt daisy. The cliffs known as the Selah Cliffs Natural Area Preserve was established in 1993 to protect this flower.

The Fred G. Redmon Bridge is also known as the Selah Creek Bridge. It is part of the Interstate 82/ Highway 97 between Ellensburg and Yakima and carries traffic more than 300 feet above the Selah Creek. Redmon was a Washington highway official at the time of the construction of the bridge in the 1970s.

Stonehenge is pretty impressive, but so are the views from the bluff on which it sits, overlooking the Columbia River and the small village of Maryville.
