...Catawba Island
on Lake Erie

"First of all," as the visitor center lady said to me," it isn't an island." So, in fact, it's a peninsula that jets eastward into Lake Erie. But it certainly has the island feel. It's not huge. One could drive it all in one day, one big loop. But the thing is, there's so much to see and do, no one with any joy of travel or adventure would want to do it in one day.

At the west end of the peninsula is Port Clinton, and at the east end is East Harbor State Park and Marblehead Lighthouse. All are worthy of time spent. Port Clinton's downtown section has a pedestrian zone (it may have been temorary) where a live band performed and picnic tables were set out for visitor enjoyment. Shops and restaurants are of no shortage.

There's no more peaceful setting than Marblehead Lighthouse. Just walking the grounds brings tranquility.

iIn between these stops are parks, beaches, eateries, wineries, marinas and ferry transports to outer islands.

Lakeview Park and Port Clinton City Beach offer nice views, fishing, swimming and boat watching.
Jetties not only guide boats into harbor, but they make for good fishing and strolling.

Upon leaving Catawba I found this barn. Barns always make me stop for a photo.
lighthouse
Marblehead lighthouse and its grounds are definitely highlights of Catawba. Built in 1821, the lighthouse is still active today. It stands 65 feet tall, and its light that flashes every 6 seconds can be seen, on a clear night,, as far as 11 nautical miles.
Lake Erie is the smallest and most shallow of the five Great Lakes. It is approximately 210 miles long and 57 miles wide.

Marblehead has had 16 keepers including the first two women lighkeepers on the Great Lakes, both taking over when their husbands had passed. The lighthouse is on the National Register of Historical Places.
