...The Honeymoon Cove Trail
A super hike at the lake

One of the prettier hikes with fantastic views of Arizona's Lake Pleasant is called the Honeymoon Cove Trail. I've done this trail twice in recent months, and both are recorded on this page.

More serious hikers could probably do the approximate 2- to 3-mile hike in less than an hour. But the scenery on this stretch of Lake Pleasant, on both hikes, had us stopping often to take in panoramic views of the lake and distant mountains. And, of course, we had to inspect every piece of driftwood along the way to determine whether it was worthy of being considered a "desert treasure." And, of course, much of it was.

The trail's official starting point is from the Desert Outdoor Center at the far (north) end of 87th Avenue, which isn't always accessible to us RV-ers. But there is another route that connects onto the main path from near the north ramp on Lake Pleasant...when the water is low. It involves a bit of picking one's way through the brush and cacti in spots, but it seems we were, for the most part, on a clear, albeit unmarked, path. Elevation gain: minimal.

Start the hike from the Lake Pleasant north ramp. Go to the parking lot and look across the ramp to the hillside (with your back to the restrooms). From that point of view, you'll see the clearly-marked path. Again, when the lake's water level is up, the path is inaccessible, so the hike must be done in early or late fall before the lake water rises.

Here are a few pictures of our wonderful, fun-filled trips.

Often is the case in the desert that along with the beauty comes the not-so-pretty. We spotted this javelina head, apparently the body taken off by desert scavengers. Despite the gruesome image, we were amazed by the set of teeth on this wild creature.

A tarantula crossed our path early on the trail, not too long after seeing a lone burro.

Is that a kokopelli jaunting across our horizon??!!
11 gals hiking
Here begin photos taken on the second hike on the trail. One of the pleasures of this trip was getting to know some of the gals who previously were mere acquaintances.

On the second hike, we decided to return via the Outdoor Center's official trail, past the center, then onto the main road that leads to the center. It's truly the long way around, and we wished we'd taken our normal return path through the cacti and brush. Besides that, we were on the road illegally, as it's closed to the general public. The upside, however, is that had we not gone the long way around, we wouldn't have seen these guys, the burros. There were about four of them, and they kept their distance.
