The Phoenix zoo is rightfully proud of its Bornean Orangutan exhibit. Four orangutans make up the exhibit: Duchess, Bess, Michael and Kasih. Kasih is pictured here. She is the daughter of Michael and Bess. She was born at the Phoenix zoo in 2006.
Michael, her dad (pictured far below) was born in Los Angeles in 1987 and came to the Phoenix zoo in 2000. Michael is the only male in the group, and is distinguishable by his extra heavy cheek-pads. Finger tip -to-finger tip, his arm span reaches nearly eight feet.
Duchess is the matriarch of the group and the mother of Bess. She is the oldest Bornean orangutan in North America at age 50. She came to the Phoenix zoo when she was two years old and has produced seven babies, four of which are still living.
